how often should disc rotors need machining?
I had my brake pads replaced on a 2007 Subaru at 65,000km, and was told to machine the discs aswell, however now at 89,000 I am being told to replace brake pads again, and machine the discs again. Do discs need to be machined that quick apart? The only issue I am getting a slight puslation when braking - but that is only when brakes are hot. I need someone to give me a second opinion. Another shop was going to charge me to check them.
Heat is a big enemy of brake rotors. Has your driving style changed since the last brake job? Excessive heat generated by hard or long braking can generate hundreds of degrees of heat and cause rotor warping. Another cause can be as simple as uneven of excessive torque on the tire's lug nuts. That is enough to stress the rotor more on one side tan the other. If the pulsing is only occasionally irritating, I would wait a while.... and then get a torque wrench to check how tight things really are. For most cars, 100 ft/lbs is a good final number with steps at 50 and 80 lbs on the way there done in a star pattern.
