Bikes Direct Discusses Ways to Get the Most Out of Recreational Cycling Clubs

How do I put the gear cable back on my bike?
Hello!
I recently painted an old bike I was given and to do so I slipped the gear cable out of its place holder on the crossbar (I had to use a bit of force to get it out). I am now having trouble getting it to back as I can't get the cable housing back far enough to slip on. Can someone please explain very simply and clearly how I would best get the gear cable back in place. The bike is a Specialized Hardrock mountain bike.

Pull on the cable as you turn the pedals. That will move the derailleur to the largest gear in the back. Move you shifter to the highest gear to get even more slack. Insert the cable and shift to the lowest gear. You are done. When I clean my shift cable I leave the derailleur in the lowest gear and put the shifter in the highest gear and remove the cable housing. Move the housing around so I can wipe down the cable and apply a little TriFlow.
